The rich tradition of ethnographic art is deeply rooted in the history of animism and the worship of nature, serving as a means to communicate with the spiritual realm. These hand-carved artefacts often depict revered animals, embodying their qualities and characteristics in a truly captivating manner, whilst carrying symbolic meaning, such as protection, strength, power, wisdom, and courage.

This is a powerful exhibition of sculpture and masks of mainly African origin. Each piece tells a story of ritual identity, showcasing the intricate craftsmanship and cultural significance behind these artefacts.

A small selection of figurative works supplement the exhibition, highlighting the practice of blending human and animal features in African art. Their compelling beauty is a testament to the human desire for expression and connection with the divine.

This exhibition invites you to discover a world of artistry, where each piece reflects the soul of its creator and the spirit of its people. Sourced from art dealers specialising in ethnographic and tribal art, these works, dating from the mid to late 20th century, offer a glimpse into the diverse cultural expressions of a range of ethnographic peoples.

Opening/PV Saturday 13 April, 2-4pm.

The exhibition continues on Saturdays, 11-4pm (and weekdays by arrangement).
AVAILABLE TO VIEW ONLINE FROM 14 APRIL.
