Punu Gabon Royal Mask

A rare example (originally one of a pair), these masks are carved to symbolise the idealised beauty of female ancestors. They are characterised by nine diamond shaped sacrificial markings on the forehead, and temples (a reference to the nine mythical clans from which the Punu are derived), high, rigid coiffures, and protruding lips. Mainly used in celebration dances, although white kaolin versions are sometimes used in mourning rituals. The Punu still reside on the left bank of the Upper Ngoume River, Gabon.

Early-mid 20th c. Blik private collection since 2016. Signs of ageing, staining and wear. Stand included.
