Antelope Mask (Kwele, Gabon)



The antelope symbolises resilience and survival. Kwele masks represent the spirits of the forest and are presented during initiation ceremonies, and also used to protect villages from harm. These masks traditionally depict the antelope, and feature two large horns, with areas of the face often painted with white kaolin clay.

Hand-carved from a single piece of wood, patinated with white kaolin.

Origin: Kwele, Gabon. Latter half of the 20th c. Wall hung. Good condition.
