Antelope Mask (Kwele, Gabon)

Symbolising protection, resilience and survival, this spiral-horned antelope, hand-carved from a single piece of wood, has a textured surface and a two-tone patina. Kwele masks represent the spirits of the forest, and are presented during initiation ceremonies, as well as being used to protect villages from harm. These masks traditionally depict the antelope, and feature two large horns, with areas of the face often painted with white kaolin clay.

Overall height with stand: 73cm.

Origin: Kwele, Gabon. Latter half of the 20th c. Very good condition.
