Baule Goli Mask
One of the most famous West African masks, the characteristic, round-shaped lunar Goli is surmounted by two horns evoking the buffalo. The mask's circular face signifies the sun's life-giving force, while its horns represent the buffalo's strength.
The Goli is the first of four masks worn in a tribal dance (especially during harvest festivals), celebrating peace and joy. There are always two dancers, one wearing a male and one wearing a female version of the mask. The red patina seen here may signify the female version.
Unique, wood, pigments, patina. Very good condition. Height with stand: 65cm.
Origin: Baule, Ivory Coast. Signs of wear. Latter half of the 20th c.
