Kalao Bird I (Senufo, Ivory Coast)

The mystical Hornbill (Kalao bird) is believed by the Senufo to be one of the first creatures on earth. Also known as the Guardian Bird, it symbolizes intellectual power, knowledge, and protection. Seeing one is thought to bring good luck and prosperity.

Unique, hand-carved from a solid piece of wood, partially clad with brass sheet metal (Repousse). Excellent condition.

Origin: Senufo, Ivory Coast. Latter half of the 20th c.
