LOT 116: Nine Warriors in a 'Dragon Boat'

A superb hardwood carving of nine African warriors in a 'Dragon Boat'. Each face is unique. All have their paddles but are missing their spears. The figures have been glued into the boat at some point in the past.

A Dragon boat is a traditional man-powered watercraft found in China and parts of Africa. The helm of the boat usually features the head of a dragon-like creature, although other animals are occasionally depicted. The creature here is possibly a Panther or Cheetah.

Mid 20th Century. The piece is in reasonable condition with just one chip on the hands of the front figure where the oar is held. Mounted on an oiled hardwood base.
