LOT 113: Chambri Pottery

A rare piece of earthenware Chambri pottery from Papua New Guinea, with facial features (nose and mouth) on both handles. The underside has no base.

Hand built with clay from the Sepik River, collected by tribal women from the nearby Aibom Village. c.1960s/'70s.

Chambri pottery is extremely fragile due to being pit-fired at a low temperature. As such it is rarely found without chips or repairs. It was essential for food preparation and storage in the thatched stilt houses along the River. The overall
condition is fair; a chip on the corner of the right handle (suffered during recent shipping), and minor chip on the edge of the base.
