LOT 115: Namji Fertility Doll

A stunning Fertility Doll from the Chad region of Africa. Purchased from Tribal Art Dealer Francois Djenohan, Evanston, IL, in 2013.

The Namji are famous for their wooden dolls which are considered the finest and the most beautiful dolls in Africa. Adorned with beads, cowrie shells and coins, they were carried on the backs of young girls (like real infants), to ensure their fertility and to help prepare them for later motherhood.

Early- mid C20th. Provenance Certificate provided. Very good condition.
