LOT 124: Kota Gabon Guardian Figure

Reliquary figures of the Kota tribe are distinguished from their neighbours by 'stitched' copper overlays. Attached to baskets containing the bones of ancestors, their purpose was to guard and protect them from evil.

It is important to note that it was the bones that were sacred, not the reliquaries, and during migrations it was not unusual for these cumbersome sculptures to be left behind. They have become much sought after by museums and collectors.

Early 20th Century. Very good condition.

Wood, copper sheet, metal, fibre.

74 x 27 cms
