Punu Gabon Royal Mask

A rare example of a Punu Mask. These masks are carved only by men to symbolise the youth and idealised beauty of female ancestors, or Queens. They are characterised by nine diamond shaped sacrificial markings on the forehead, and/or temples (a reference to the nine mythical clans from which the Punu are derived), high, rigid coiffures, and protruding lips. Mainly used in celebration dances; white kaolin versions were sometimes used in funerary rituals. The Punu still reside on the left bank of the Upper Ngoume River (Gabon).

Early 20th Century. Very good condition - slight damage to the tip of the nose.

Wood, copper, beads, cowrie shells, fibre. Height with mount: 65cm.

32 x 18 cms
