LOT 111: Pende Mbangu Mask

The distorted features of Mbangu masks represent sickness or bewitchment - thought to be the result of wrong-doing or a spell cast by a rival.

These masks were usually danced to remind the community about tribal rules and responsibilities and what might become of individuals who didn't observe them. Often half the mask would be dark and half white.

A flaw in the wood on the right side adds real drama to this carving. 19th - 20th Century. Pende region, Dominican Republic of Congo.
