The Art of Carving 2015 16 May to 27 June 2015

A video demonstrating techniques used in stone carving will run throughout the exhibition, with an opportunity to meet and ask the artists questions at the Private View on Saturday 16 May, 2.00-4.00pm.
John Brown was born in 1931 and studied sculpture at Hornsey School of Art. John carves contemporary figurative sculptures expressing emotions and relationships. He has undertaken numerous public and corporate commissions for schools, hospitals, churches and corporates. The latter include commissions for SmithKline Beecham; Racing Green (Bluewater Retail Park); Investec- City HQ; the Prudential Insurance Company; the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Marlow; and Kawaguchi Metal Industries, Japan. Private collectors of his work include Sir Elton John, Simon Cowell, Andrew Castle, and Lesley Ash.
Malcolm Franklin studied Fine Art at the University of Wolverhampton (1990- 93), where he developed a love of stone carving, under the guidance of John Paddison. From there he moved to London to take an MA in Site- Specific sculpture at Wimbledon School of Art (1993-95). His sculptures are carved from a single block of stone or wood with no intended single viewpoint, and are non- representational, with shifts in planes, openings and passages which both occupy and displace space. Franklin is also a celebrated printmaker and has work in many private and public collections, including the British Museum, London, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Egypt, and the University of Wales Art Collection. He is a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA).
Jo Sweeting is a sculptor and letter carver who works from her studio in Brighton. Jo uses a variety of stones and combines abstract figurative and botanical imagery. Her work is currently inspired by the concept of 'Shul' - traces left on the body and in the memory, and by poetry.
The exhibition continues on Saturdays 11am-4pm, until 27 June, and at other times by arrangement.
